There are usually up to 5 classes of hitches starting from class 1 or class I all the way to class 5 or class V. While class 1 has an opening size of 1 ¼ inches and can handle a GTW of up to 1500 pounds, class 5 has an opening size of 2 ½ inches and can take up to 12000 pounds.

The higher the class, the more the weight capacity.
