Dash cams use power from the cigarette lighter. When the vehicle’s ignition is turned on, the camera automatically starts recording and store the footage in the attached micro SD card. Some cameras have a feature that allows them to overwrite old files when the memory is full; this is called loop recording.

Some advanced dash cams use Wi-Fi to stream the footages directly to an external storage device like a smartphone or PC.
